After leaving Monterey, we continued south on the Coastal Highway. We stopped in Carmel to watch the waves.
We spent most of the afternoon driving through Big Sur, with many stops along the way to gape in wonderment. The Bixby Bridge, built in 1932, has appeared in many car commercials.
Another view of Coastal Highway 1.
We arrived at San Simeon in time to see the elephant seals settle on the sand for the night at Hearst State Beach. Some 16,000 elephant seals come to this rookery to rest, mate and give birth.
The rabbit and the crow are real (just like yesterday's piano). Nothing's more fantastic than reality.
Keep on bringing us the scenery! We hope the government shutdown doesn't cause you to miss some of the national parks along your path. Why don't the creeps in Washington just settle it and allow the country to get back to work? Safe travels!

Thanks, but we somehow keep finding amazing things to see and do, even without the national parks.
