Eureka, CA, 10-3

We continued south along the California coast and discovered that to get to the best views...

you must travel the worst roads.

Sea stacks not unlike the ones we saw at Rialto Beach on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state.  Offshore and out of sight in the following two pictures are five or six sea lions swimming and two pelicans fishing.

This is the wave that bit Jim on the ass because he was squatting on the beach to get the perfect angle--idiot.

We left the coast and continued down the Redwood Highway.  We hiked another trail through a forest that seemed to have a different feel to it:  some of the trees were larger than what we saw yesterday, the undergrowth was thicker, and many individual trees were "clumped" together creating a visual "wall" of redwoods.

We stopped for the night in Eureka, and took a walk through town before dinner.

The Humboldt County Library

The Carson mansion, whose original owner made his fortune in lumber, was built of redwood, as were many of the other beautifully preserved Victorian homes here.

The rear exterior wall of the Center for the Performing Arts.

And a mural across the street from the Center.

We stopped for dinner in the Lost Coast Brewery where some unfortunate patrons were greeted by a tickle on the head from Charlotte (she rides up and down the web and moves her legs).
