Las Vegas, NV, 10-14

Before leaving Barstow we stopped to see the Casa del Desierto, a beautifully restored Harvey House, which served as both a train station and hotel for early 20th-century travelers.

We stopped at Calico, a 19th-century silver-mining ghost town, restored and supplemented in the 20th century to attract the tourists going to and from Las Vegas.  The town was kitschy and touristy, but the surrounding rock formations and landscape were spectacular.

Because building supplies were scarce, homes and the hotel were built on the front of rock walls so natural indentations and openings in the rocks could be used as rooms or for storage.

Joshua Tree National Park, south of Las Vegas, is closed, but we found some Joshua trees along the highway.

We spent a night at the Monte Carlo in Las Vegas.  We had to go all the way to Nevada to see Blue Man Group.  Crazy over-the-top fun!

Vegas at night.  More crazy over-the-top fun!

Travel Tip:  Because Las Vegas is in the desert, it gets cold at night.  Always carry a sweater.
