Kingman, AZ, 10-15

The morning after in Las Vegas, where some sleep it off...

...while others just keep gambling.

We drove from Vegas to Hoover Dam, which was built into a gorge, the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, in the early 1930s.

Lake Mead, created by the construction of the dam.

We took a tour of the power plant at the bottom of the dam.  There are a total of 17 big-ass turbines.

One of several inlaid designs in the terrazzo floor of the power plant.  All incorporate Native American motifs taken from pottery, baskets, and sand paintings of the Colorado River watershed.

In recent years, the level of Lake Mead has fallen 50 feet.  If it falls another 20, there won't be enough water pressure to power the turbines.

You can't chew gum while on a tour of the dam.  This gum-wad wall is dated and initialed in, yes, gum.

View of the Colorado River south of the dam as we drove toward the Grand Canyon.
