San Francisco, CA, 10-6

Before taking the ferry to San Francisco, we walked around Jack London Square in Oakland where this early 20th-century author and social activist lived.  In addition to a bronze statue of London...

...we found a reconstruction of his Yukon cabin (using some of the actual logs), a bronze statue of White Fang, and London's favorite Oakland watering hole, the First and Last Chance Saloon with its sloping floor, a result of the 1906 earthquake.

We exited the ferry at Pier 1 of San Francisco's Embarcadero.  Although Jim was tempted, we did not sample...

We spent the day walking to Pier 41, stopping at several spots along the way.  The Bay Aquarium was one of the best, with its large jellyfish exhibit...

...its underwater tunnels where you feel as though you are swimming with the fishes...

...and a very smart and playful one-year-old octopus.

Pier 39 is like Chicago's Navy Pier on steroids.

Street entertainment:  a one-man band...

...and a balloon swallower (yes, he downed the whole thing).

Entertainment is also provided by animals, in this case, about 250 sea lions which swim in from San Francisco Bay to sun themselves on floating platforms built especially for them.

You can buy almost anything along the waterfront...

...but shoplifting is risky here.
