We crossed the border into California and headed for the Redwood National and State Parks Visitor Center in Crescent City. We were hopeful that the state was keeping it open, but it was closed. We tried the town library across the street, but the staff of one appeared to be very busy.
We eventually made our way to the local Chamber of Commerce where we received the welcome news that none of the redwood parks are gated and some great advice on what to see. We started our redwood tour on a narrow, windy road through the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.
These are big-assed trees; ranging up to 325 feet tall and 30 feet in diameter. Many of the trees in the grove we walked through today are over 2,000 years old.
Birds and flying squirrels live in the forest canopy high above, but other life forms such as ferns, mosses and fungi, as well as bizarre root formations carpet the ground.
