It was a perfect morning to take a ferry across the bay to Sausalito.
Our first glimpse of a real orange tree.
A bike made locally from hardwoods.
The Sausalito Civic Center Library. Note the solar panels on the roof.
On the return trip to San Francisco we saw the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz (which we were unable to visit because of the national parks shutdown).
This cyclist provided our best street entertainment today. The photo stops his action, but he was spinning full circle on the back wheel with both arms outstretched.
We visited Mission Dolores, the oldest intact mission in California. Founded in 1776 and dedicated to St Francis of Assisi, the establishment of this mission marks the origin of the City of San Francisco. Its adobe walls are four feet thick and withstood the devastating San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Redwood beams lashed together with rawhide still support the ceiling.
An example of the artwork on the three altars completed from 1796 - 1810. The columns are wood painted to resemble marble.
Part of the cemetery next to the mission with graves dating back to its founding.
The towers of the third parish church built next to the mission. The first church was destroyed by fire, the second by the 1906 earthquake.
A wooden sculpture inside the mission showing Satan trampled by the Archangel Gabriel.
Our last stop of the day. We strolled up and down the streets, unmistakable tourists among the young street people.
You two have turned into Hippies again! I knew you still had the touch!
ReplyDeleteFlower power, peace, love!
Hair is shorter now, but inner Hippies still intact.
DeleteThanks for all the pictures of gorgeous San Francisco and surroundings. It makes me feel nostalgic even though I've never actually been there. I think if you grew up in the sixties you spent some time in San Fran whether you physically went there or not. It drifted over our heads like an atmosphere. By the way, did you pick up a pipe in the Head Rush shop?
ReplyDeleteRight on, Jane! It did drift over our heads, then settled in our hearts.
DeleteAbout the pipe...
