We headed to the beach at Malibu for one last look before leaving the coast. We watched this pelican fish in the surf.
The steady breeze off the ocean at Santa Monica beach...
...makes it a good place to parasail, or...
...fly a kite. Here a shoe is being used to anchor the kite.
The Santa Monica pier.
Old Route 66, which begins in Chicago and was travelled by countless depression-era migrants, ends in sunny Santa Monica. It was the end of the trail for them, but the beginning of the trip back home for us.
We headed east through the San Bernardino Mountains.
The Great Step Pyramid of Victorville, CA.
Our first glimpse of the Mojave Desert outside Barstow, CA.
Lawrence and Sue Damon loved to golf. At Lawrence's funeral, Sue placed a bucket of neon-yellow golf balls at the back of the church for people to take as a remembrance. We told their children at the start of this trip that we were going to leave our golf ball at some beautiful spot which we would know only when we saw it. Today we found that spot.
That's a beautiful beautiful spot for the golf ball to grace! It's hard to believe that you've reached the midpoint and are heading back, but it looks like there's still a lot to see. And, by the way, we have yet to catch a picture of the rumored tent!
ReplyDeleteThe sad truth is, Jane, this entire trip including the tent, is a figment of our imaginations.
DeleteAre you kidding me? You aren't going to at least drive south to San Diego and then start the trip back? Oh man......
ReplyDeleteJohn
Sorry, bro, our original plan was to go to San Diego, but we spent too much time on the northern leg. Blame it on those goddamn thermophiles, Chihuly, and the sea stacks.
