Columbia River Gorge, OR, 9-21

Safety Tip:  When hiking in the Columbia River wilderness, don’t piss off a Great Horned Owl.  It can sever your carotid with its talons or your spinal cord with its beak.

After a stop at the Columbia River Gorge Discovery Center, we drove the length of the gorge on our way to Portland, Oregon.

Health Tip:  If you become constipated while camping in the wilderness, use a disposable Fleet enema instead of the two-foot long pewter enema syringes used by doctors on the Lewis and Clark expedition.

  1. Hey Anne and Jim! I had a lot of catching up to do on account of being busy, so I haven't been able to drop in lately. Thanks for all the fantastic pictures--the country is on a different scale out west, that's for sure. Stephanie and I are enjoying the mountains, rivers, and canyons immensely. We especially love the geysers--you had some good luck getting those pictures (or else some impressive photographic chops).

Also love your travel tips: I think here we get the tips that are really useful, that other travel guides are shy about including (like about chaining and enemas, for example), so keep it coming (in all senses!). The Northwest has some first class beautiful countryside, and I'm so glad that you are there to experience it. (Still waiting for a photo of your amazing tent.)

    Rock On!

    1. At the end of this trip, we'll start publishing our own travel guide; Frodo's (not to be confused with Fodor's) Twisted Travel Guide. Can you pull some strings and get the U of Chicago to publish it?

We haven't put our tent up in awhile, Jane, and probably won't now until we reach sunny California. At the slightest hint of rain or freezing temps we seek out a camping cabin or, in Portland tonight, a cheap motel. (We know you understand our desire to avoid a rainy night in a floating tent.) We are also hesitant to tent-camp in bear country, even though we always carry our trusty bear spray.

  2. I think the two foot long enema "injector" would have some "issues". 1...over-heating. 2....too much pressure / force. 3....two feet of liquid just ain't enough for a "travel brick"!
